Iran Conflict Bill Hits $47.1 Billion – Munitions Alone Account for $29 Billion

WASHINGTON, October 28, 2026 — The financial cost of the United States’ military conflict with Iran has climbed above $47.1 billion, with more than $29 billion allocated to replacing expended bombs, missiles and other munitions, according to the latest Pentagon figures reviewed by Reuters.

The new estimate represents an increase of more than 25 per cent from the $37.5 billion figure announced by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in July, highlighting the growing financial burden of a conflict that has continued far beyond initial expectations.

The figures reveal that the largest share of the military expenditure is tied directly to weapons used during combat. More than $6 billion is also required to replace damaged or destroyed military equipment, including aircraft and drones.

However, the overall bill could rise further because the latest estimates do not clearly account for the full cost of repairing American military bases damaged by Iranian missile and drone attacks across the Middle East.

Munitions Consume the Largest Share of Spending

The replacement of expended munitions accounts for the largest portion of the reported military costs. These include missiles, precision-guided weapons, bombs and air-defence interceptors used during American operations against Iranian targets and to defend forces and regional partners.

The heavy expenditure raises concerns about how quickly the US military can replenish its weapons stockpiles. Some advanced missiles and defensive interceptors require complex manufacturing processes, and replacing them may take years rather than months.

A Congressional Research Service report published in October highlighted concerns about strategic inventory shortfalls and limitations in the defence industry’s ability to increase production quickly.

The depletion of certain weapons could also affect American military preparedness in other regions, particularly if Washington faces another major confrontation while replenishment remains incomplete.

Military Equipment Losses Add Billions

Beyond ammunition and missiles, the Pentagon’s estimates include more than $6 billion for replacing military equipment lost or damaged during the conflict.

Aircraft, drones and other operational equipment are expensive to replace, while maintaining a large military presence in the region requires additional spending on fuel, transport, communications, logistics and personnel support.

The financial figures therefore extend beyond the immediate cost of launching strikes. They also reflect the resources required to sustain operations and restore military capabilities after combat.

The Cost Could Be Higher Than Reported

One of the major uncertainties surrounding the latest estimate is the cost of repairing American military facilities damaged by Iranian attacks.

The available figures do not clearly establish the full financial requirement for restoring those bases. Depending on the extent of the damage and decisions about reconstruction, additional expenses could push the overall cost considerably higher.

The Congressional Budget Office estimated in September that the conflict had cost the US Department of Defense approximately $38 billion as of August 1. It also warned that continued fighting would add billions more, depending on the intensity of military operations.

The latest Pentagon figures reviewed by Reuters suggest that the financial burden has continued to grow since that assessment.

Political Pressure Mounts in Washington

The rising cost comes at a sensitive political moment for President Donald Trump’s administration, with US congressional elections scheduled for November 3.

The conflict’s financial burden, alongside the effects of higher global energy prices, has created additional pressure on the administration and Republican lawmakers. Questions about the war’s objectives, its duration and the resources needed to sustain it have become increasingly important in the domestic political debate.

Lawmakers must also consider whether additional funding will be needed to replenish weapons inventories, repair damaged facilities and maintain military readiness.

The Pentagon has not publicly released the latest estimate in full, according to Reuters, and the department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

A Growing Strategic and Economic Challenge

The reported $47.1 billion cost illustrates how quickly a modern military conflict can consume national resources. Beyond the immediate spending, the United States faces the longer-term challenge of rebuilding depleted weapons inventories while maintaining its military commitments elsewhere.

The conflict has also contributed to disruptions in global energy markets, placing additional pressure on consumers and businesses through higher fuel and transportation costs.

For Washington, the central question is no longer simply how much the war has already cost, but how much more will be required if military operations resume or intensify.

With more than $29 billion tied to replacing expended munitions alone, the financial consequences are likely to extend well beyond the battlefield and into future defence budgets.
