President Donald Trump is making one thing clear: he believes the conflict between Washington and Tehran began long before he entered the White House.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Mississippi on October 26, Trump declared: “We didn’t start the war with Iran. Iran started the war with us.” He pointed to decades of hostility between the two countries, including attacks on Americans and Iran’s support for armed groups.

And that is where the history gets complicated.

The 1979 Iranian Revolution transformed relations between the two nations. The seizure of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and the holding of American hostages for 444 days became defining moments in the breakdown of diplomatic relations.

Since then, Washington and Tehran have experienced decades of sanctions, proxy conflicts, military confrontations and mutual accusations.

But here is the important distinction: the history of a decades-long conflict is not the same as determining who initiated the current war.

U.S. and Israeli forces launched strikes against Iran on February 28, 2026, triggering a wider regional conflict. Iran subsequently retaliated against targets across the region.

So when Trump points back to 1979, he is making an argument about the history of U.S.–Iran hostility—not changing the timeline of how the current war began.

And the internet might put it this way:

“Trump is basically saying: Don’t blame me for a conflict that started before I even entered politics!” 😂

But with military operations, rising costs and diplomatic efforts still shaping the conflict, the bigger question remains:

Can decades of hostility finally end through negotiations, or will another generation inherit the same conflict?

👇 What do you think: Is Trump right to point to 1979, or should the focus be on the decisions that started the current war?
